✓ Funding ✓ 6 Divisions ✓ Collaborative culture
PEP27 will be exciting! We’re growing to new locations and are actively recruiting dozens of new competitors. Please note that schools will be able to race one craft at the national competitions: PEP East, PEP West and PEP Gulf Coast. We invite regional schools to join the PEP community by racing in local events in Ohio, Alabama, and North Carolina. The six divisions are back! We are still supporting new schools with $7,000 in funding and returning teams with $5,000 in funding.
At this moment, we are still securing race dates, but expect to publish those dates in August. If you have questions, we’re happy to connect with you and your team on individual calls. The PEP Discord (https://discord.gg/ZsXtgw6SDT) is also a great place to ask questions. You can also sign-up for an Office Hour meeting:
- Monday, August 31: 4-4:30pm ET
- Tuesday, September 15: 1-1:30pm ET
The Office Hours meetings will be recorded and added to the Education page. You can sign-up online using the Google Form or you can use the PDF form and email it to [email protected].

PEP Workforce expands, develops, and celebrates naval engineering
PEP represents a highly effective mechanism for fulfilling its mission to discover, develop, and deliver future naval capabilities while cultivating the scientific workforce required to sustain America’s technological advantage. ONR was established to foster scientific research and maintain future naval power, and the competition serves as an early-stage innovation ecosystem where students apply emerging technologies in electric propulsion, batteries, autonomous systems, sensors, controls, and advanced materials. The competition encourages experimentation, rapid prototyping, and hands-on engineering in ways that closely mirror ONR’s broader investments in research and technology development. By supporting PEP, ONR helps create a community of future engineers and researchers who are already familiar with naval challenges and motivated to pursue careers supporting the Navy and Marine Corps.
PEP26 competitors are welcomed to compete again!

PEP strengthens the Naval Research Enterprise, the Submarine Industrial Base, and maritime industrial needs across the country.
- Naval Research Enterprise (NRE): PEP Workforce develops the pipeline of engineers and scientists studying propulsion, autonomous systems, energy storage, advanced manufacturing, and systems integration technologies critical to national defense. We actively support student research and help them find graduate programs and research organizations to further their next steps.
- Submarine Industrial Base (SIB): PEP Workforce strengthens the Submarine Industrial Base by preparing students in disciplines such as constructing maritime components, using cutting-edge manufacturing techniques, and integrating systems to withstand water intrusion and slamming effects. These skills and abilities are essential for the development, construction, and sustainment of next-generation submarines.
- Maritime companies: If you are seeking to hire and recruit from this rich pool of talented students, please reach out!
